FAQ
What is Snacks with Scientists?
Snacks with Scientists is an academic and community outreach run by National Honor Society members at High Technology High School to engage girls in STEM. In order to accomplish this, we will be connecting 7th and 8th grade girls with successful female scientists who can share their stories, experiences, and knowledge about being women in STEM. Who are the scientists? Our scientists come from all different walks of life and study or work in a variety of fields. Some are involved in the academic world as they are currently studying for a degree or doing research in a university lab. Others are part of the professional world and are employed by companies large and small, private and public, and for-profit and nonprofit. Please visit our Meet the Scientists page for more details. Why should I sign up for Snacks with Scientists? Snacks with Scientists is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet like-minded students from across the area, network with female high school students who are eager to connect with you, and to talk to extremely talented, accomplished women who delve into the many fields of STEM every day. Sign up now and invite all of your friends to as well - it will be an event you won't want to miss! How much does Snacks with Scientists cost and how do I pay? We have a suggested donation of $10 per student for the event, with all proceeds going towards Sister's Academy of NJ, a new all-girls middle school in Asbury Park that aims to help underprivileged girls receive an education. Donations will be accepted during check-in on October 19th and may be paid in either cash (in an envelope with the student's name on the front) or by check (made payable to "HTHS Student Activities"). What if I have a friend or sibling who is not a girl in 7th or 8th grade? While we are very excited that many students are enthusiastic about Snacks with Scientists, the event is designed specifically for 7th and 8th grade girls. Students not in these grades will not be permitted to attend. Studies show that if girls aren't interested in STEM by the 7th or 8th grade, they are very unlikely to pursue a career in STEM later on. Our goal is to introduce girls in Monmouth County to STEM now, so that they will be part of the future of those fields. What if I can't stay for the whole event? We highly encourage you to stay for the entire event so that you can talk to as many scientists as possible. However, if you know that you will have to leave early, please have your parents send an email to [email protected] with your name and early dismissal time so that we can have it on record. What if I need to cancel my registration? If you have to cancel your registration please email us ASAP at [email protected] so that we can offer a spot to another student. Can parents attend? We love you, parents - but Snacks with Scientists is designed for 7th and 8th grade girls to explore STEM and talk to scientists on their own! What did previous girls think of Snacks with Scientists?
